Japanese Heritage Language Program
Our Japanese Heritage Language Program is designed for children growing up with connections to Japanese language, culture, or heritage, as well as learners who are committed to immersing themselves in Japanese language and culture.
Rather than relying on traditional textbooks, learners develop Japanese through communication, cultural experiences, and everyday interactions. Japanese is used throughout each session for instruction, conversation, play, and collaboration, creating an immersive environment where learners regularly hear, acquire, practice, and use the language in authentic ways. Language learning is naturally integrated with culture, community, and everyday experiences, encouraging learners to use Japanese not only in the classroom but also as they engage with Hawaiʻi’s rich Japanese community and the many opportunities to experience Japanese language and culture in daily life.

Why heritage language learning matters in Hawaiʻi
Many of our learners are heritage language learners with unique family and cultural backgrounds, while others join because of a genuine interest in Japanese language and culture. Learners may encounter Japanese not only at home, but also in their daily lives through community events, cultural festivals, local businesses, grocery stores, restaurants, and other community settings. We value the diverse experiences every learner brings and strive to create meaningful connections between language learning, family, culture, and the local community.
We believe families are essential partners in the learning journey. By working together, we hope to create meaningful opportunities for learners to strengthen their Japanese language, deepen their cultural understanding, and develop a strong sense of identity, belonging, and community.
Current Program
★Japanese Heritage Language Class
Location: Kailua, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi
Current Schedule: Saturdays, 3:15–4:45 p.m.
Tuition & Attendance
The current tuition is $35 per session.
Families are asked to register before participating in our programs. Rather than requiring families to commit to an entire semester, tuition is paid per session. We understand that family schedules can change and that unexpected situations may arise, such as school activities, competitions, visiting relatives, illness, or transportation issues.
If your child will be absent, we kindly ask that you notify us by 6:00 p.m. on the day before the session so that we can plan activities and prepare appropriately.
While we offer flexibility, we strongly encourage regular attendance. Consistent participation helps learners become comfortable using Japanese, build meaningful friendships, develop confidence, and become familiar with the routines, customs, and everyday expressions that are naturally woven into our program. Over time, we hope Japanese becomes a meaningful and enjoyable part of each learner’s daily life.
Class Size
To encourage meaningful communication and individualized support, class sizes are intentionally kept small.

As Hawaii Keisho grows, we hope to expand our programs to additional days, times, and locations based on community interest. If the current schedule does not meet your family’s needs, or if you are interested in programs in another area, we encourage you to contact us. We welcome your ideas and will consider adding new classes when there is sufficient interest.
